Soccer's Steve King Named America East Co-Player of the Week

9/10/2007

UMBC junior goalkeeper Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) was named America East co-Player of the Week for games ending Sept. 9, 2007. King shared the honor with Binghamton senior defender Adam Chavez.

King notched his second and third shutouts of the season in UMBC’s 0-0 double-overtime tie against St. Francis (N.Y.) and a 1-0 win over Iona. He was challenged in both games, recording five saves in each, including a lunging save of a Terrier shot in the 87th minute to preserve a tie in regulation. The junior goalkeeper has allowed only one goal to date this season and has a scoreless streak of 339 consecutive minutes. King, who did not have a single shutout last season, has now played 3,134 consecutive minutes in the UMBC cage and his 123 saves are tenth in school history.

He earned a spot on the adidas Kick Off Classic’s All Tournament team, along with Retriever defenders Philippe Bissohong and Chris Williams and midfielder Shondell Busby. The Retrievers are 3-0-1, their best mark through four games since 1999. They host an outstanding VCU team on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
