Goalkeeper Steve King recorded UMBC's first shutout since 2005, breaking a streak of 20 in a row.

Annapolis, Md.—The UMBC men’s soccer team captured the Anders Soccer Classic with a 2-0 victory over Temple at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Retrievers, 2-1 winners over Air Force on Friday, captured the title of the season-opening tournament.

UMBC is off to its first 2-0 start since opening the 2001 season at 3-0.

As in the win over Air Force, the two UMBC goals were the first career scores by Retriever players. Philippe Bissohong (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), a senior defender, scored in the first half and Ime Umoh (Baltimore, Md./Methodist College), a sophomore transfer, contributed an insurance goal in the latter stages of the game. Freshmen B.J. Quigley (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) scored in Friday’s victory.

Moreover, UMBC recorded its first shutout since a 3-0 blanking at Boston University late in the 2005 season. Junior netminder Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) recorded five saves to do the job, ending a streak of 20 straight games without a UMBC clean sheet.

After misfiring on several good early scoring opportunities, UMBC finally broke through in the 35th minute, as Bissohong won the ball in a scramble after Bryan Moffa’s (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) corner kick. The rangy defender was able to dribble a shot past Temple keeper Tony Pratico from ten yards away.

The Retrievers put the game away with 7:03 remaining as junior Kevin Gnatiko (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) set up UMBC’s second goal for the second straight game. He drove down the left side and sent a right-footed cross to the opposite side of the box, where Umoh headed it home inside the right post.

UMBC outshot the Owls, 15-7 for the match and improved to 2-0 lifetime against Temple. The Retrievers also had seven corners to just one for Temple.

Pete Caringi’s squad opens the home schedule vs. St. Francis (N.Y) on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the second game of the adidas Kick Off Classic.
