Men's Soccer Announces 2007 Schedule

The UMBC men’s soccer team faces a tough non-conference schedule prior to its always-grueling America East Conference slate as Head Coach Pete Caringi announced his 2007 schedule today.

UMBC will open the season at the Navy Classic, opening the campaign vs. Air Force on Friday, Aug. 31. In a pre-determined format, the Retrievers take on Temple on Sept. 2. UMBC opens the home schedule with the 11^th annual adidas Kick-Off Classic the following weekend. The Retrievers take on New York rivals St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sept. 7 and Iona on Sept. 9.

Coach Caringi’s squad will then face five tough tests from regional foes Virginia Commonwealth, Lehigh, James Madison, Loyola (Md.) and Mt. St. Mary’s before opening America East Conference play. The VCU Rams will make their first appearance at UMBC since 1986, while the James Madison Dukes last played at UMBC in 1990. Lehigh, which ended UMBC’s 25-game home unbeaten streak in 2005, was ranked No. 15 in the final national poll last season.

The Retrievers open league play vs. 2005 America East champion Stony Brook on Saturday, Oct. 6 at UMBC Soccer Stadium. Five of UMBC’s nine league games will be at home, including an Oct. 20 Homecoming date vs. Albany and the regular season final vs. UNH on Nov. 3.

"I am very excited about our schedule,” Coach Caringi said. “We have one of the toughest non- league schedules we have ever had here. James Madison, VCU and Lehigh are all national powers who we are thrilled to be playing. When you add local rivals Loyola and Mt. St. Mary's and two very tough opening weekend tournaments, we will have our work cut out for us. I expect our young team to mature later in the season against a very tough America East schedule."

Notes: Air Force is the only school on the schedule that UMBC has never faced before… the Retrievers are 13-4-3 in ten previous adidas Kick-Off Classics and have won four titles… six of UMBC’s final seven home games will be played on Saturdays… UMBC had played Mt. St. Mary’s for 13 straight years until last season… the Mountaineers have appeared a UMBC school-high 31 times on the schedule and the Retrievers hold an 18-11-2 advantage… Caringi enters his 16^th year at UMBC with an overall record of 172-105-30…last season’s 5-9-3 ledger was non-winning season for the Retrievers since 1997.
