Men's Soccer Completes 2007 Recruiting Class

The UMBC men’s soccer program completed its recruiting class for the fall of 2007 by signing four additional student-athletes.  The newest Retrievers are junior Shondell Busby (Toronto, Ontario/Francis Marion College), and freshmen Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill), Brendan McCarron (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall).

The quartet joins six student-athletes that committed in the early period. Striker B.J. Quigley, the Baltimore Sun’s Metro Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year, Pennsylvania natives John Paul Waraksa and Jeremy Taylor, Baltimore-area products Sean Rothe and Dustin Dzwonkowski, and Mike Gutowski, son of a UMBC soccer alum, committed to play for the Retrievers in February.

Busby is a speedy, skilled midfielder who competed at Francis Marion University (S.C.) in 2004 and 2005. He led the team in scoring in 2004 and earned Peach Belt All Tournament Team honors in 2005.

Houapeu is a forward who earned first team All-Metro honors from The Washington Post in his senior season. He scored 18 goals and added eight assists for Watkins Mill and was also named as a first team All-State performer. The speedy native of the Ivory Coast is as Maryland Olympic Development player and competes for the Potomac Cougars club team.

McCarron was also selected to The Washington Post’s All-Metro (first) team, and the All State first team. The midfielder was cited as the Anne Arundel county Player of the Year as he scored 14 goals and added five assists last fall for the county champions. He competes for the Baltimore Bays club team.

Williams is a 6’3”, 200-lb. central defender who competed at Calvert Hall in Baltimore. He is a teammate of McCarron’s with the Baltimore Bays.

"I am extremely pleased with our recruiting class,” Head Coach Pete Caringi said. “It is one of the most decorated group of players that we have brought in. I am very excited about the potential of this class and how they will fit in with our returning group of players.”
