UMBC OPENS SEASON WITH KAPPA KICK-OFF CLASSIC

8/27/2001

Fans will most certainly need their roster cards early this season for UMBC soccer games. Pete Caringi's squad lost six starters from last year's 15-5 team, a group that fell one game shy of a second consecutive NEC title. The new version of the Retrievers debut this weekend, as UMBC hosts the Kappa Kick-Off Classic at UMBC Soccer Stadium. On Friday, Mt. St. Mary's and Delaware kick off the action at 2:00, followed by UMBC vs. Iona at 4:30. On Sunday, Iona faces the Mount at noon, then the Retrievers battle Delaware at 2:30. All games will be played at on the grass at UMBC Soccer Stadium. UMBC has won this tournament the past two years, defeating Stony Brook and The Citadel in 1999, and knocking off Radford and Holy Cross last season. It will be the first meeting between UMBC and Iona (6-13-1 last season), while UMBC holds a 12-7-1 series lead over the Blue Hens.
