UMBC Freshmen Commit for 2001
7/5/2001
Nine student-athletes have committed to UMBC soccer for the fall 2001 semester, it was announced today by Head Coach Pete Caringi. Several of these freshmen will be asked to contribute this season, as the Retrievers lost six starters and eleven letterwinners from last season's 15-5 squad.
Shoring up the offense will be forward/midfielder Derek McElligott (Greater Grace Christian Acad./Baltimore, MD), forward Franco Del Priore (Sheridan College/St. Catherine's, Ont.), forward George Bakoulas (Archbishop Curley HS/Baltimore, MD), midfielder Danny Mongello (Wilde Lake HS/Columbia, MD), midfielder Stephen Keel (Soccer Academy/Bradenton, FL), and Dale Rothe (Archbishop Curley HS/Baltimore, MD). All four of the Maryland players competed for the Maryland State Champion U-18 Baltimore Stars and all earned All Metro honors. Keel, originally from Colorado, competed for the highly-acclaimed Soccer Academy in Bradenton.
The Retrievers lost two of three starters on defense, and newcomers Michael Pennacchia (Calvert Hall HS/Baltimore, MD), Matthew Saenz (Brazoswood HS/West Columbia, TX), and netminder Andy Marchica (Paint Branch HS/Silver Spring, MD) bolster the Retriever back line.
UMBC has amassed 34 victories over the past two seasons, tied for the sixth-best figure in the nation. Pete Caringi's team will open the 2001 season by hosting the Kappa Kick-Off Classic on Friday, August 31 (vs. Iona) and Sunday, September 2 (vs. Delaware).
