Baltimore, Md.—For the second straight Saturday, the UMBC men’s soccer team held a late lead against a conference heavyweight, but the result was the same as visiting Vermont (5-4-3, 2-0-1) scored in the 81^st minute and tied the Retrievers, 1-1 in double overtime. UMBC is now 3-6-3 overall and 0-1-2 in league play.

UMBC is now 0-0-3 when playing on Saturdays this season.

The Retrievers struck quickly on a nice passing play in the sixth minute. Freshman forward Dan Maudslay hustled to save a ball in the corner and touched it out to freshman midfielder Andrew Gillis. Gillis then dropped it off for junior defender Bryan Moffa, whose crossed the ball to the far left post. Senior midfielder David Feazell headed it past Vermont netminder Roger Scully for his fifth goal of the year at 5:46.

The Catamounts, the America East pre-season favorites, applied the pressure in the second half, but did not generate many dangerous chances until they broke through. Defender Nick Mead had a free kick from midfield and his service came off a Retriever player in front of netminder Steve King. Freshman forward T.J. Gore knocked the ball back to sophomore forward Jordan Crasilneck, who quickly settled and volleyed a shot past King from nine yards away at the 80:13 mark.

UMBC had a pair of quality chances to win the game, but Scully came up with key stops on Feazell in regulation and sophomore midfielder Dan Bulls in the second overtime session to preserve the draw. He had three saves, while King made a career-high nine stops, five of which were relatively routine saves in the final 20 minutes.

UMBC moved to 10-1-5 at home in two-plus seasons of America East play, but the 2006 squad is just 2-2-2 on the season when scoring the game’s first goal. The Retrievers now face two straight games on the road, traveling to Stony Brook on Wednesday and Maine next Saturday.
