Mezzadra Scores Twice As Men's Soccer Draws With Gonzaga, 2-2

9/2/2006

  • Box Score

—Senior midfielder Kevin Mezzadra scored both UMBC goals, including the game-tying goal with 7:28 remaining as the Retrievers (1-1-1) played to a 2-2 overtime tie with Gonzaga (1-1-1) at the Anders Classic at the U.S. Naval Academy.

UMBC had to come from behind on two occasions to achieve the result. The Bulldogs opened the scoring on a goal by Chris Hoyd in the 35th minute before Mezzadra tied the score just before intermission. He headed home Bryan Moffa’s free kick from about five yards away at the 42:37 mark.

Gonzaga went ahead, 2-1, in the 64th minute as George Josten eluded the UMBC defense and beat netminder Steve King for the go-ahead score. But, in the waning moments David Feazell attempted a cross into the box and the Gonzaga defense failed to clear the ball. Mezzadra pounced on the mistake and scored his fourth goal in three games from ten yards away to send the game to extra time.

UMBC was outshot, 23-9 for the game and King posted four saves to help UMBC achieve the draw. The Retrievers meet U. Mass at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday to conclude play in the classic.
