FOUR TOURNAMENTS HIGHLIGHT 2006 MEN'S SOCCER SCHEDULE

The UMBC men’s soccer team opens its season by competing in four weekend tournaments as part of a 17-game 2006 schedule. A young Retriever team will kick off America East Conference play by hosting perennial power Boston University on Saturday, September 23 as they attempt to earn their third trip in four years to the league tournament, which gets underway on October 28.

UMBC opens the season on Friday, August 25 as they host St. Joseph’s University in the nightcap of the ninth annual adidas Kick-Off Classic. Navy and Virginia Tech will play in the opener and the Retrievers will face ACC power Virginia Tech on Sunday, August 27 at 2:30 p.m.

All seven home games this season will be played at UMBC Soccer Stadium, on its new Bermuda grass surface.

Following the adidas Kick Off Classic, Pete Caringi’s team will once again compete in the Anders Navy Classic as they will meet first-time opponents Gonzaga and U. Mass on September 1 and 3. The following weekend, the Retrievers head to Philadelphia to take part in Drexel’s Classic, as they will face the host Dragons on September 8 and then La Salle on September 10. UMBC completes its tournament schedule with a weekend in Las Vegas as they play UC-Irvine on September 15 and the host UNLV Runnin’ Rebels on September 17 in the UNLV Rebel Classic.

The Retrievers return home on September 20 to host Howard before opening league play vs. Boston University three days later.

“The schedule will be one of our toughest in my tenure at UMBC,” said Coach Caringi, who enters his 16^th season at UMBC.  “We will be playing teams from all over the country that we have not played before. It will be very challenging, but also exciting. With a young group of players, we will find out our strengths and weaknesses very early, and hopefully improve throughout the year.”
