NEW BERMUDA GRASS SURFACE TO BE INSTALLED AT UMBC SOCCER STADIUM

A renovated grass field will be installed at UMBC Soccer Stadium, Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown announced today. The installation will take place this spring and summer and the field is expected to be ready for the start of the 2006 men’s and women’s soccer seasons.
The renovation includes installation of a new sub-drainage system, improved irrigation system, soil amendment and installation of new Bermuda grass. The designing architect/engineer is Whitney, Bailey, Cox, and Magnani, LLC. The project will be completed at a cost of $250,000.00.
UMBC Soccer Stadium, situated adjacent to UMBC Stadium, was constructed in 1998. It currently has a seating capacity of 1,500 and features a press box and scoreboard. The new Bermuda grass surface is believed to be the only one of its kind among America East Conference schools.
Both the men’s and women’s soccer programs have made it to the America East Tournament (six-team field) in two of the three years as conference members. The men won the America East regular season title in 2003 and finished in second place this season.
“Although our soccer stadium is a beautiful venue, we have had problems with the surface and drainage,” Dr. Brown said. “This renovation demonstrates the commitment that the university has to our men’s and women’s soccer programs.”
"Everyone involved with the soccer program is excited and looking forward to the new field,” head coach Pete Caringi said. “With its completion we will now have one of the finest soccer facilities in the country."
"We could not be more excited about our new field,” head women's soccer coach Michelle Salmon added. "UMBC continues to make a commitment to our soccer program and I know our players cannot wait until they have a chance to play on the best field in the state.”
