MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALS VS. BINGHAMTON WEDNESDAY EVENING
11/7/2005
GAME NOTES
2OTH SEASON OF DIVISION I SOCCER: UMBC is competing in its 20th season of Division I soccer. UMBC is now 211-140-35 (.592) in 20 years of Division I competition and 347-255-67 (.569) in 39 seasons of varsity competition. With the win at Boston University, the Retrievers have recorded eight straight winning campaigns and posted a .500 mark or better in all but three (1986, 1988, 1997) of 20 Division I seasons.
THEY’RE IN: UMBC was the #1 seed in the 2003 America East Tournament, but finished seventh and did not qualify for last year’s tourney.
HOME, SWEET HOME: Until last October 29, UMBC had not lost a regular season home game since falling to Navy, 3-1, in September of 2002. They were unbeaten in 28 straight (20-0-8) in that span until a 1-0 setback vs. Lehigh. UMBC is 8-2-2 vs. America East Conference opponents at home, suffering their first regular season loss in three seasons last Wednesday to Stony Brook. The Retrievers have outscored their league foes, 26-7, at home. AE foes hadscored just two goals in an 11-game span played in Baltimore until Stony Brook deposited three on November 2.
RANKED: The Retrievers wereranked in the South Atlantic region for the fourth consecutive week, coming in at #6 last week. It is the 13th time in Pete Caringi’s 15 years at UMBC that the Retrievers have dented the regional rankings.
STREAK HALTED: UMBC had qualified for its conference’s post season tournament for nine straight seasons until a seventh-place finish (4-5 America East, 8-6-3 overall) last season. The Retrievers’ last early November vacation occured in 1994, when they also posted a record of better than .500 (9-8-1).
IN REVIEW: The Retrievers, 9-6-3, slipped to second place with a 3-2 overtime loss to Stony Brook on the final day of the regular season. UMBC held first place or a share of the lead for all but 11 days of the conference season, which began on September 24 and ended on November 2...until Wednesday’s setback.
BITS AND PIECES: UMBC has not scored a goal (0-4) in its last four playoff games and are 2-8 in conference semi-final games...UMBC’s overtime loss to Stony Brook was its first since extra-time loss since 2002 (2-1 loss at Howard)...they were 3-0-13 in 16 OT games prior to last Wednesday’s game...all six of UMBC’s conference wins this season occured via the shutout route...Marcus Gross’ successful penalty kick vs. Stony Brook was UMBC’s first attempt of the season...they have not allowed a pk attempt in ‘05.
