MANUEL MARIEL EARNS AMERICA EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Freshman forward Manuel Mariel (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) was named America East Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for games played through October 30, 2005.
Mariel scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute in UMBC’s 3-0 win at Boston University on Saturday. It was his third goal of the year and second game winner, having posted the GWG and game’s first goal in UMBC’s league opener vs. Albany. He scored an unassisted goal from eleven yards out at a sharp angle, beating BU netminder Chad Comroe in an accumulating snowstorm at Nickerson Field.
The win moved UMBC (9-5-3 overall) to 6-1 in the America East Conference, which gives them a first-round bye in the upcoming America East Tournament. The Retrievers will capture the regular season title with a win or tie against second place Stony Brook (5-1-1 A. East) in Wednesday’s game at UMBC Stadium.
