GROSS, KING EARN AMERICA EAST HONORS

10/24/2005

Marcus Gross

UMBC senior defender Marcus Gross was named co-America East Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week and freshman netminder Steve King was named America East Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for games played from October 17-23, 2005.

In addition, Gross earned a spot on College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week. UMBC’s central defender heads a defense which has posted shutouts in seven of UMBC's last eight games. UMBC blanked New Hampshire, 2-0, and Maine, 1-0 (ot) this week to sew up a spot in the America East Tournament. The defense only allowed 4 UNH shots on Wednesday and 2 Black Bear shots on Saturday. Gross has three goals and one assist on the season.

King posted his sixth and seventh shutouts in his seventh and eighth collegiate starts this week with a 2-0 win over UNH and a 1-0 overtime decision vs. Maine. He made a pair of saves vs. the Wildcats and did not need to register any stops vs. the Black Bears. In 784 minutes of action, King has allowed four goals, all in one game vs. Vermont. His GAA dropped to 0.46, which leads the conference, and his seven shutouts are a school record for a UMBC Division I netminder.
