10/12/2005
The Retrievers are now
UMBC did extend its home unbeaten streak to 26 (18-0-8) with the draw. It was Navy that was the last team to win a regular season game at UMBC, in September of 2002.
Each team had its scoring chances. UMBC dominated the first half, outshooting Navy, 9-1, but its best chance went awry when freshman midfielder Dan Bulls (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) knocked the ball over the net from close range after a long Retriever possession.
Navy rallied in the second half, as both teams attempted six shots. Navy’s Kenan Knieriem shot wide of an unguarded net in the 55th minute, and Travis King struck the crossbar as he ran onto a centering pass in the 75th minute.
The scoring chances diminished in overtime, and Bulls had the best chance, as his volley from six yards on a Powell Cucchiella cross again went over the crossbar.
UMBC outshot Navy, 18-13, and Navy’s Thomas Jenkins made five saves. UMBC freshman netminder Steve King recorded his fifth shutout in six starts as he made four stops for the hosts.
