MEN'S SOCCER ANNOUNCES 2005 SCHEDULE

—Ten home games, including three under the lights at UMBC Stadium, highlight the 2005 UMBC men’s soccer schedule.

For the first time since 1998, UMBC will not open the season at home, as the Retrievers will take part in Navy’s Classic with games vs. Georgia Southern and Niagara on September 2 and 4. The following weekend, the Retrievers will host the Eighth Annual UMBC adidas Classic as UMBC entertains Rider and Davidson at UMBC Soccer Stadium on September 9 and 11.

The Retrievers return to UMBC Stadium for three night games on the new Momentum synthetic turf beginning with a clash vs. Mt. St. Mary’s on Wednesday, September 21. UMBC also plays prime time games vs. Navy on October 12 and vs. Lehigh on October 26.  The Retrievers have not played at UMBC Stadium on a regularly scheduled basis since the 1997 campaign.

UMBC plays 2004 NCAA quarter-finalist VCU in Richmond, Virginia on September 14 and opens America East Conference play at Hartford on September 24. The Retrievers play the last two America East champions on the road for the second straight season, (Binghamton, 2003, October 5; Boston University, 2004, October 29) while league foes Albany, Maine, New Hampshire, and Stony Brook visit UMBC in 2005.

“It’s an interesting schedule with many teams we have not faced before and it will be exciting to play national quarter-finalist VCU in Richmond,” said Head Coach Pete Caringi, entering his 15^th year  as the Retriever bench boss. “Historically, some of our best crowds have come under the lights so it’s a good opportunity for us to create some excitement with our night games.”
