UMBC senior forward Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md./Greater Grace) and junior defender Marcus Gross (Barnstaple, England/The Park School) were both named to the 2004 NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third Team, it was announced by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America)/adidas All America Committee.

For McElligott, it was his third consecutive year on the team, after earning Second Team honors in his sophomore and junior seasons. He posted eight goals and added three of assists this season, finished his career with 47 goals and 106 total points, and is currently the school’s Division I leader in both categories. Only Ray Ford (51 goals, 124 points, 1977-80) produced more in a career than did McElligott, who also earned All Conference (Second Team) honors for the fourth straight year.

Gross earned First Team All America East honors for the second straight year as UMBC’s central defender. During Gross’ tenure, the UMBC defense has permitted under a goal a game, allowing 53 goals in 55 games over the past three seasons. The 6’3”, 200-pound defender has started all 48 career games he has played in and is an effective contributor on offense. He had tallied a pair of goals and added an assist in 2004, giving him 6 career goals and 5 assists.

Pete Caringi’s Retrievers recorded their seventh straight winning season in 2004 with a mark of 8-6-3.
