Baltimore, MD—The UMBC men’s soccer team (7-5-3) battled Howard University (3-7-3) to a 0-0 double overtime draw in a non-conference contest at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

It was the second straight shutout recorded by UMBC, after a 2-0 win over Northeastern on Saturday. Freshman netminder Josh Osit (Somerset, NJ) got his second career start and posted his first career shutout. It was UMBC’s first scoreless draw since an August 31, 2003 vs. Lafayette.

UMBC outshot Howard, 6-2, in the first half, and its best chance occurred when a Powell Cucchiella attempt was cleared off the line by a Howard defender. Both Osit and Howard netminder Jason Williams were tested several times in the second half, as the Retriever freshman finished the game with four saves and Williams repelled seven for the Bison. UMBC outshot HU, 17-8, for the game and had 9 corners to a pair for the Bison.

Cucchiella had five shots for UMBC, while Howard’s Jonnie Bess recorded a team-high three for Howard. It is the first draw in the series, with UMBC leading 8-2-1, but the margin of victory was one goal in each of the last three decisions.

UMBC is now 13-0-6 in its last 19 regular season home games, dating back to the 2002 season. The Retrievers are now 0-3-2 in their last five Wednesday contests. They get back to conference play this Saturday at first-place Boston University.
