MEN'S SOCCER: CUCCHIELLA, WATSON EARN AMERICA EAST WEEKLY HONORS

10/18/2004

UMBC junior midfielder Powell Cucchiella (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) and freshman midfielder Matt Watson (Redditch, England) were named America East co-Player of the Week and America East co-Rookie of the Week respectively. Cucchiella shares his honor with Albany goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, while Watson splits his honor with Boston University midfielder Roland Erlichman.

Ironically, Watson and Cucchiella are 1-2 in the league in assists, as Watson has 7 in 10 games played, and Cucchiella has 8 in 12 contests. Cucchiella is tied for third in the league in total points with 18 and is sixth in goals with 5, while Watson is sixth in total points with 13.

Cucchiella had an assist vs. Navy on Wednesday, then tallied a pair of goals and added an assist in a 4-1 America East win over Maine on Saturday. The Baltimore native entered this season with one goal and one assist in 23 games played. Watson notched the game-winning goal vs. Maine, then set up George Bakoulas on a brilliant back heel pass for UMBC’s third goal of the game.

UMBC has a big week in store, with league games at defending America East champion Binghamton on Wednesday and at home for the Homecoming contest vs. Northeastern on Saturday.
