MEN'S SOCCER TRAVELS TO NEW HAMPSHIRE FOR AMERICA EAST BATTLE WITH WILDCATS

10/5/2004

The UMBC men’s soccer team (4-3-1, 0-2-0 America East) will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they conclude a brutal four-game road swing at New Hampshire (1-2-5, 0-0-2 AE) on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at UNH’s Lewis Field.

Since a 3-0 win over George Washington two weeks ago, UMBC has dropped games at Albany (1-0), Virginia (3-1) and Stony Brook (3-0).

UMBC’s three-game losing streak is its first since 1997 when the Retrievers dropped four in a row to conclude the season. They have only had a pair of two-game slides since the 1998 campaign. The Retrievers have not allowed six goals in a two-game span since permitting 2 in a 3-2 win over St. Francis (PA) and 4 in a 4-0 setback to St. Francis (NY) to conclude the 1998 season.

Senior forward Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md./Greater Grace) became just the third player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau when he netted career goal #45 (to go along with 10 assists) as UMBC took a brief 1-0 lead at #14 Virginia on Wednesday. McElligott ties Giuliano Celenza as the leading UMBC Division I scorer in school history as he tallied his sixth goal of the season vs. the Cavaliers.

Senior fullback Mike Pennacchia (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) did return to the lineup vs. Stony Brook after missing the first three games of his career with an ankle injury. UMBC outshot the Seawolves, 17-13, but remain scoreless in two league games to date.

The Retrievers defeated UNH, 3-1, in Baltimore last season in the first meeting between the two teams. Marcus Gross, Marco Angelini, and George Bakoulas were the goal scorers for UMBC, which built a 3-0, before a Nicholas Mello score at 69:00. The Retrievers outshot the Wildcats, 13-4.

UNH is 1-2-5, and tied their first two America East games last week, posting a 2-2 draw vs. Maine and a 1-1 tie Saturday at AEC defending champion Binghamton. All eight of the Wildcat games this year have been decided by 1 goal or been ties.
