CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 22 ranked University of Virginia men's soccer team (6-2)turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 victory over the UMBC Retrievers (4-2-1) in a non-conference match at UVa's Klockner Stadium this evening. UMBC jumped on the scoreboard first just over 34 minutes into the contests before the Cavaliers answered back with three consecutive goals, including the game-winning goal by UVa's Ian Holder to pull out the victory.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead at 34:21 when Derek McElligott scored the first goal of the match. UMBC's Matt Watson played a ball across the field to a wide open McElligott just inside the top of the box. McElligott then one-timed the ball from 16-yards out for the goal.

The goal was McElligott's sixth of the season, 45th of his career, and gave him 100 career points. He is just the third player in school history to reach that plateau.

The Retrievers' lead was short lived however, as the Cavaliers answered right back and tied the match at 1-1 just over three minutes later at 37:40 on a goal by UVa's Matt Oliver. UVa took a 2-1 lead at 42:38 on Holder's eventual game-winning goal. The Cavaliers' Zane Hill sent a pass out in the flank to Freeman, who again served up a cross into the box where Holder headed the ball into goal for the score. Virginia took its 2-1 lead into the locker room at the halftime.

In the second period, the Cavaliers added an insurance goal and stretched their lead to 3-1 at 71:02 when first-year midfielder Chris Tierney scored his first collegiate goal. .

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made two saves in the victory, while UMBC's Andy Marchica made a game-high eight saves in the loss. The Cavaliers outshot the Retrievers by a margin of 20-6 for the match.
