MEN'S SOCCER TRIES TO REBOUND VS. #14 VIRGINIA IN CHARLOTTESVILLE
9/28/2004
The men's soccer team faces the difficult task of trying to regroup from a tough loss on Saturday by facing the nation's 14th-ranked team, the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville on Wednesday evening (7pm).
The Retrievers got off to a 4-0-1 start, including a 2-1 upset of another ACC squad, the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Despite having the better scoring opportunities on Saturday, UMBC lost its conference opener, 1-0, at Albany. UMBC played the game without injured starting defenders Mike Pennacchia and Jim Fendryk and both remain questionable for play on Wednesday. The setback marked the first time since 1997 that the Retrievers fell in its conference opener.
They won't receive any sympathy from the Cavaliers (5-2) as UVA was nipped, 2-1, by rival North Carolina in its most recent outing. The Cavs' other loss occured by the same score against nationally-ranked St. Louis.
The shutout loss to Albany was just UMBC's fourth scoreless game in regular season play in the past six seasons (one in each of the past four seasons). All have occured on the road.
