MEN'S SOCCER OPENS AMERICA EAST PLAY AT ALBANY ON SATURDAY

9/24/2004

The men’s soccer team opens 2004 America East play on Saturday, when they visit the Great Danes of Albany at 1pm. Both teams are off to excellent starts this year, as UMBC is 4-0-1, and Albany is 5-1-1. The Retrievers are fresh off a 3-0 win over George Washington, while UA surprised Syracuse, 1-0, both on Wednesday.

The two squads battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw in Baltimore last season. Senior forward Derek McElligott scored both of UMBC’s goals to give the Retrievers leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Albany got the game-tying goal in the 77th minute of play.

After recording a goal and an assist vs. GW on Wednesday, McElligott now has 98 career points (44 goals, 10 assists) and is looking to become just the third player in school history to record 100 points. He is also seven goals shy of Ray Ford’s school record of 51. McElligott leads UMBC with 5 goals in 5 games, but the team’s leading scorer is junior midfielder Powell Cucchiella, with 12 points (3g, 6a) to date.

UMBC played to a 2-2 draw in last season’s America East opener, also on the road at Northeastern. UMBC is 3-0-3 in its last six league openers, dating back to a 2-1 loss to Liberty in 1997.
