McELLIGOTT SETS UMBC DIVISION I GOALS RECORD IN 10-0 ROUT OF NJIT

9/4/2004

UMBC (1-0-0) senior forward Derek McElligott (Baltimore, MD/Greater Grace Academy) scored three goals and became the Retrievers’ all-time leading goal scorer their Division I history in a 10-0 rout of New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-2-0) in the nightcap of the Greene Turtle/adidas Kick Off at UMBC.

McElligott got UMBC on the board early, tapping in a short cross from Kevin Mezzadra at the 17:23 mark. After freshman Matt Curran (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) scored goals at 29:58 and 37:16, McElligott converted Curran’s lead pass for a 4-0 Retriever advantage at 39:19, and completed the hat trick on a direct kick at 43:13.

The 10 goals scored by UMBC is the most since tallying 10 vs. The Citadel in 1999. Junior Powell Cucchiella (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) added a goal and four assists and Curran tallied 2 goals and an assist in his debut. Cucchiella's four assists ties a 14-year old school record set by John Samartzis in 1990.

The first match was evenly played throughout, but Towson had a golden opportunity to win when T.J. Thompson was fouled in the box with 26 seconds to play in regulation. But the Tigers’ Mike Dougherty hit the crossbar on the penalty kick  Late in the second overtime, GSU’s Lawrence Smith’s shot rebounded to Mullen, who slipped a shot past a crowd for the game-winning goal for the Eagles.
