RETRIEVERS PICKED SECOND IN PRE-SEASON AMERICA EAST COACHES POLL

The UMBC men’s soccer team was picked second by the league’s coaches in the 2004 America East Conference pre-season poll.

 

Pete Caringi’s Retrievers, last season’s regular season champions, earned 3 first-place votes and 72 total points in the balloting. UMBC (10-3-5, 5-1-3 AEC, ’03) returns three First Team All America East players in senior forward Derek McElligott, senior midfielder Danny Mongello, and junior back Marcus Gross. Binghamton (12-3-7, 4-1-4 AEC, ’04) , the 2004 America East Tournament champions, edged UMBC for the top spot with 6 first-place votes and 75 points. Five-time league champion Boston University picked up the other first place vote and 65 points for third place.

Northeastern (57), Hartford (55), Stony Brook (36), New Hampshire (25), Maine (24), Albany (22) and Vermont (19) rounded out the poll.

The top six teams advance to the league tournament, held at home sites, beginning on Saturday, November 6. The title game is set for Saturday, November 13, at the highest remaining seed, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
