McELLIGOTT NAMED TO THIRD TEAM PRE-SEASON ALL AMERICA SQUAD BY COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS

8/2/2004

UMBC senior forward Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md./Greater Grace Christian Academy) was recently named Third Team Pre-Season All America by College Soccer News.

McElligott is a three-time First Team all conference standout and earned Second Team All South Atlantic region honors in his last two years. He enters the 2004 season with 39 career goals, already third on UMBC’s all-time scoring list and within range of school record-holder Ray Ford’s (1977-80) 51 career goals. McElligott needs just three goals to surpass current Baltimore Blast standout Giuliano Celenza (1999-2000) and become UMBC’s Division I (1986) all-time leading scorer.

In addition, UMBC was ranked #38 (also receiving votes) in the 2004 College Soccer News  Top 30 National Poll. UMBC won the regular season title in their first America East season in 2003, while Binghamton (ranked 22nd by the 2004 poll) captured the tournament title.

The Retrievers were among 20 teams cited as those “To Keep An Eye On” by the website.
