MEN'S SOCCER INKS SIX TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
3/16/2004
Six prospective student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UMBC and compete in men’s soccer, Head Coach Pete Caringi announced today.
Four of the six incoming freshmen are from the Baltimore metropolitan area. First Team All Metro selections Matt Curran and Bryan Moffa head the list, and are joined by local standouts Ryan Callinan and Andrew Kordula, along with prospects Rocky Bowers and Josh Osit.
Curran (Baltimore, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) was a First Team All Metro, First Team All County, and All State selection. With an uncanny touch inside the penalty area, the senior striker continually delivered the necessary offense to lead the No. 5 Dons to a 17-2-2 season and a trip to the MIAA A Conference semifinals. Curran, a four-year varsity contributor, worked hard to get the ball and made the most of his opportunities, scoring 17 goals and adding two assists for first-year coach Kyle Swords. Curran is a member of 2003 Region 1 Champion and National Finalist Baltimore Bays.
Like Curran, Bryan Moffa (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) also earned First Team All Metro, First Team All County, and All State honors. Some of the area's most creative midfield work came from the talented senior, whose strong work rate and gifted ball skills helped carry the Mavericks (10-3-2) to the Class 2A state semifinals. Despite seeing extra defensive marks, he finished the season with 18 goals and 11 assists. Moffa finished his career with 48 goals and 21 assists. He is a member of 2003 Region 1 Champion and National Finalist Baltimore Bays.
Ryan Callinan (Baltimore, Md./ Calvert Hall) was a Second Team All Metro, First Team All County and All State honoree. The versatile senior midfield captain had six goals and 11 assists as a catalyst in the Cardinals' second straight MIAA A Conference title run. He is also a member of 2003 Region 1 Champion and National Finalist Baltimore Bays. Andrew Kordula (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech), a teammate of Moffa’s, was an All State and Second Team All County defender. He anchored the Eastern Tech backline and has played club soccer for the Region 1 Premier League Champion Baltimore Bays.
Midfielder Rocky Bowers (Rockville, MD/Covenant Life) earned First Team All Montgomery County and First Team All Conference honors. He played his club soccer for the 2001 State Champions Potomac Cougars and more recently, the Baltimore Bays. The midfielder dominated his high school conference with 30 goals and 14 assists.
Josh Osit (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) was named First Team All Central Jersey, All Area, All County and All Conference. The 6’1” goalkeeper has excellent hands and is very good in the air. He holds Franklin’s single season (12-2002) and career (29) records for shutouts. The 4 year New Jersey ODP and high school varsity member plays club soccer for 2003 Region 1 Runner-Up Jersey Knights Nomads.
