MEN'S SOCCER TRIES TO WRAP UP PLAYOFF BERTH IN "HOMECOMING GAME" VS. BOSTON UNIV. ON SATURDAY

10/23/2003

The UMBC men’s soccer team can wrap up a berth in the six-team America East Conference Tournament and solidify their grasp on first-place with a victory on Saturday over Boston University at 1pm at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

Saturday’s game is part of the week of Homecoming Festivities and a large crowd is expected to see two of the top teams in the league attempt to keep their respective unbeaten streaks alive.

UMBC is unbeaten in eight straight games (5-0-3), and sits atop the league standings with a 4-0-3 record, good for 15 points. The Retrievers are 9-1-5 overall after Monday’s 3-0 non-conference win over Mt. St. Mary’s. The Terriers are unbeaten in seven straight (4-0-3) contests after Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Maine. Boston University has slipped to third place in the AEC, with a 3-0-3 record (12 pts.), behind Northeastern at 4-2-1 (13 pts.), but has a game in hand on both the Retrievers and the Huskies.

The game should feature two of the league’s top scoring offenses. UMBC, with 29 goals to date, features the nation’s #4 goal scorer in junior striker Derek McElligott, who has 14 goals in 15 contests. The Retrievers are also getting contributions from reigning America East Player of the Week, sophomore defender Marcus Gross, who has goals in his last three appearances, junior forward George Bakoulas (4 goals in last 6 games), and senior midfielder Marco Angelini (goals in last two games). BU, which has scored 27 goals to date, features senior midfielder Andrew Dorman, who just become the Terriers’ all-time leading assist man with 36 helpers (11 this season) and forward Sedrick Chin, who leads the team with 7 goals. The Terriers have scored three goals or more in four of their last six games.
