MARCUS GROSS NAMED AMERICA EAST MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

10/20/2003

Boston, MA—UMBC sophomore defender Marcus Gross was named America East Conference Player of the Week for his performance October 13-20, 2003.

Gross, the Retriever sweeper, scored the game-winning goal in UMBC’s 1-0 victory over Stony Brook, and tallied the game’s first goal again in Saturday’s 3-1 win over New Hampshire. He scored both goals in the 20th minute of play, heading in nearly identical direct kick serves from teammate Mike Joseph. Gross has scored in his last three appearances, as he converted a penalty kick in the previous win over Vermont.

The native of Barnstaple, England, leads a UMBC defense which allowed its first goal in 272 minutes after they had built a 3-0 lead over UNH. The Retrievers have seven shutouts in 15 outings.
