Emerged as the complimentary forward to Derek McElligott midway through the 2003 season...will still have to fend off challenges from underclassmen to retain that position...a “high energy” player who gets opportunities with hustle and a hard shot.
2003-Did not see any action until Game #6 vs. Delaware, but worked his way into the starting 11 at Hartford...scored the game’s first goal in his initial start at 27:11 of the first half on a blast from 20 yards out and added a second half assist in UMBC’s 3-0 win, their first victory in the America East...in his second start vs. Binghamton, Bakoulas tallied three more points (1g, 1a) in a 2-2 overtime tie with the eventual league champions...also scored vs. UNH and Mount St. Mary’s...finished second on the squad with 4 goals, 33 shots, and 17 shots on goal.
2002-Saw action in 15 games off the bench...recorded a helper on UMBC’s first score of the year vs. Hofstra and scored an insurance marker in 4-0 win over Temple...put 6 of his 11 shots on goal.
2001-Was injured in an off-field accident in pre-season and was cleared to practice just before the year opened...did not play vs. Iona, but recorded an assist in his first collegiate game in the Kappa title game win over Delaware...three days later, he again came off the bench and scored his first collegiate goal to give UMBC a 1-0 lead over Howard...scored a season-high 3 points with a goal and a helper vs. Central Connecticut...earned his first collegiate start at FDU, then scored the go-ahead goal in UMBC’s 5-2 triumph over St. Francis (NY)...all of his scoring occured in non-starting efforts.
BACKGROUND: A highly decorated local product ...was Archbishop Curley’s leading scorer in both his junior and senior seasons, and helped the Friars to the MIAA title in 1999...as a senior, he earned All-Metro, All-State, and All City/County honors...a heavily recruited player who chose UMBC because “[it] had everything I wanted in a university and a good soccer program...younger brother, Pete, is also a varsity soccer standout at Curley...enjoys watching MTV and hanging out with friends...son of Anthia and Andreas Bakoulas...born September 25, 1983.
