Jon Bell Named to United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast Region First Team

Kansas City, Mo.-- UMBC men's soccer junior Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast Region First Team, as announced on Wednesday. Bell joined six fellow America East athletes on the first team.

"I'm happy for Jon for earning this award. He worked hard all year and proved he was one of the best players in the region," head coach Pete Caringi said of Bell.

Bell appeared in 12 games, making 11 starts on the back line for the Retrievers after coming back from an injury to start the year. The junior registered one assist on the year in a 3-1 win against UMass Lowell in just his second game back. He took 10 shots with three on goal in 2018, helping the Retrievers reach the America East title game for the first time since 2014.

Since 2009, 14 different Retrievers have earned all region honors and of those 14, nine have been named to the first team. Bell joins Andrew Bulls (09), Levi Houapeu (10), Pete Caringi III (13), Oumar Ballo (13-14), Kadeem Dacres (13), Kay Banjo (14), Mamadou Kansaye (14), and Malcolm Harris (15) with first team honors.

The Retrievers finished the year at 10-6-4, 4-3-1 AE reaching the America East title game for the first time since 2014. UMBC defeated Vermont in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks before knocking off the top seed Stony Brook in the semifinals.
