West Long Branch, N.J.—Senior midfielder Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) provided the heroics on Saturday, scoring the game winner in overtime in a 2-1 win against Monmouth. Classmate Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England) tied the game midway through the second half after UMBC was down 1-0.
The Retrievers improve to 3-1-0, while Monmouth falls to 2-2-1 on the year.
Neither side found the net in the opening 45 minutes, but it was the Retrievers who put the pressure on early. Sophomore Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) got the first Retriever shot of the night on target, but Bobby Edwards made one of his eight saves in the game.
Pulliam got another chance just seconds later, but once again Edwards came up with a save. The Retrievers recorded seven shots to Monmouth's six, as keeper Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) made two saves in the opening half.
The Hawks came out of the break with a goal just four minutes in. Jake Areman got Monmouth on the board with assists from John Antunes and Andy Martinez in the 49th minute.
From there the Retrievers peppered Edwards, finally cracking through on a Cormac Noel goal in the 68th minute. Freshman Alejandro Arbelaez (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had a chance at the buzzer, but his shot sailed high as the two sides ended regulation tied 1-1.
It did not take the Retrievers long to end the game, as Hauck collected a loose ball in the box and blasted it inside the left post to give UMBC the victory.
UMBC outshot the Hawks, 20-10 including a 12-4 advantage in the second half. Pulliam led the way with six shots, putting four on target. O'Loughlin made three saves in the contest, improving to 3-1 on the year.
The Retrievers will return home to take on #14 West Virginia at Retriever Soccer Park on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
