Baltimore, Md.—UMBC men's soccer head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. announced the signing of five players to the incoming recruiting class of 2017. Three of the five signees are from the Maryland area, with one from Germany and another from Texas. The Retrievers kick off the 2017 season against Bryant at Retriever Soccer Park on Friday, August 25.

Baltimore Armour / Pipeline SC
Prior to UMBC: Matt played for Baltimore Armour Academy and finished this year with Pipeline SC. He played high school soccer for Saint Peter and Paul and earned MIAA All Conference honors. In addition, Bailey was the team captain, MVP and is also an Honor Roll Athlete with a 3.97 GPA. Matt is listed as the #111 Ranked recruit nationally by College Soccer News.
About Matt: Hobbies: weightlifting, skateboarding and surfing. Favorite Food: spaghetti, Favorite Musical Artist: Blink 182, Favorite Pro Soccer Team: Chelsea FC.
Caringi on Bailey: Matt is a tremendous midfielder with an engine that will fit right into our style of play. He is a left-footed player that will complement our team and I expect him to be competing right away to get on the field. In my opinion, he is one of the top players coming out of his class.
Baltimore Celtic SC
Prior to UMBC: Dylan currently plays for Baltimore Celtic SC. Prior to Celtic, he won 3 state championships with Fewster FC and were regional champions and national finalists in 2015. He played high school soccer at Archbishop Curley and was MIAA All Conference while and is also a four-year honors student with a 3.78 GPA. Dylan is a lifelong teammate of fellow UMBC commit Alejandro Arbelaez.
About Dylan: Favorite Food: steak, Favorite TV Show: Hawaii Five-0, Favorite Movie: Step Brothers, Favorite Musical Artist: Luke Bryan, Favorite Pro Soccer Team: Tottenham Hotspur. Dylan has also volunteered at Our Daily Bread and at First Fruits Farm.
Caringi on Poetzel: Dylan is a proven winner with both his high school team, Archbishop Curley, and Baltimore Celtic. For me, he is the kind of player that thrives at our school. He is very consistent game-in and game-out as a defender and will only get better at this level. Dylan is a great addition to our program and we are excited about him coming.
Baltimore Celtic SC
Prior to UMBC: Sam plays for Baltimore Celtic SC and recently broke the single season scoring record this past fall at Meade High School with 21 goals. During his time at Meade, Sam was a two-time All-State and All-Metro recipient, earned NSCAA All Region and was the 2016 Anne Arundel County Player of the Year. Sam is another four-year honor student earning a 4.08 GPA.
About Sam: Hobbies: snowboarding and watching movies. Favorite Food: Chipotle burrito, Favorite Movie: Step Brothers, Favorite Musical Aritst: Lil Wayne, Favorite Pro Soccer Team: Everton. Sam also participated in the "Mr. Meade" pageant for charity and was the "People's Choice."
Caringi on Solomon: Sam was a terrific goal scorer for Meade High School who broke the single season goal scoring record. We are very excited to have a forward like Sam play in our program. He has been a goal scorer his entire career and we expect that to continue in college. He was one of the best offensive prospects coming out of the state of Maryland and we have been fortunate to have had our share of great forwards.
Baltimore Celtic SC
Prior to UMBC: Alejandro plays for Baltimore Celtic SC and, like fellow recruit Dylen Poetzel, played for Fewster FC winning three state championships and one regional title. He played high school for Archbishop Curley and was an NSCAA All-South selection. Alejandro scored 25 goals and 34 assists as a three-year varsity starter while earning All-State, All-Metro and All-MIAA honors. He was also a Franciscan Scholar with a 3.71 GPA.
About Alejandro: Hobbies: playing sports, FIFA. Favorite Movie: The Dark Knight, Favorite Musical Artist: Chance the Rapper, Favorite Food: Columbian arepas, Favorite Pro Soccer Team: Real Madrid. Alejandro was also a member of the Italian Club and volunteered at Our Daily Bread and First Fruit Farms.
Caringi on Arbelaez: Alejandro is a very technical midfielder that comes from a great high school program in Archbishop Curley that has produced some of our finest players. I think Alejandro already has the skill set of a very good Division1 player and I am excited about him joining our program. He has been very successful at every level and I look forward to him continuing that success here at UMBC.
Jan Carlos Tofern
Prior to UMBC: Carlos was the youngest goalkeeper in a top amateur division in Germany.
Caringi on Carlos: Carlos is a goalkeeper with a great resume and we look forward to having him in our program. His experience in goal will help him compete right away. I think it will take some time to get comfortable with a new environment, but we are excited about Carlos being a welcomed addition to our program.
