Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Vermont on Saturday. The Catamounts got a pair of goals in the second half, and one in the first to drop UMBC to 5-8-3, 0-6-0 AE.
The Catamounts wasted little time pushing in front in the first half. Brian Wright got behind the Retriever defense on a pass from Jon Anar Barodal, chipped the ball over Retriever keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) to give Vermont a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Vermont would tack on two goals in the second half from Wright (79') and Stefan Lamanna (82') to take the match 3-0.
The Catamounts outshot the Retrievers 12-6, with the Retrievers garnering 12 corner kicks. Heavner made six saves in his final game at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers controlled much of the pace of play in the second half, including a pair of great chances by Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) early on, but.
Kahsai had a chance in the early stages of the second half from just inside the box, but Runarsson made a leaping save to keep Vermont in front. He would strike again, this time after a nice run from Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) set him up. However the shot would be blocked.
Midway through the first half, Heavner had to make a pair of saves from close range to keep the Retrievers just a goal down.
Just before the break, freshman Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) got the ball at the top of the box, made a nice move to get open, but his strike was saved by Catamount goalkeeper Aron Runarsson.
The Catamounts led the Retrievers with six shots, with UMBC adding five corners in the opening 45 minutes.
UMBC closes out the regular season at Stony Brook on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
