UMBC Strikes First; Navy Scores Twice in Second Half to Defeat the Retrievers 2-1 on Tuesday

Annapolis, Md.—The Retrievers scored in the first half, but the Midshipmen struck twice in a four-minute span to down UMBC, 2-1 on Tuesday. The loss drops UMBC to 4-6-3 on the year.

The Retrievers got on the board late in the first half, thanks to junior Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) in the 33rd minute. Kahsai collected a pass from freshman Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), and buried it in the bottom left corner for the goal, his third of the year. Weyant collects his first assist and third point of the year, after making a nice cut back in the box before sending it to Kahsai.

However Navy got a pair of goals in the second half to take the victory. Sam Bascom made a shifty move in the box, and put it in the net in the 70th minute. Just four minutes later, Andrew Hopkins placed a header off a corner kick in the net to give the Midshipmen a 2-1 lead.

Navy outshot UMBC 14-6, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half. Senior keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made four saves in net for the Retrievers.

Navy controlled the run of play early in the first half, including a header off a corner that sailed just over the crossbar. Heavner had to make a big save right before the half from point-blank range to keep the Retrievers ahead at the break.

In the second stanza, Heavner once again was called upon to preserve the lead, making a pair of saves, including a sprawling stop with an open net.

David Harris (Waimanalo, Hawaii/Reservoir) had a chance late, but his shot went wide.

UMBC returns to Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Retrievers host Hartford in America East action at 7 p.m.
