Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer used a pair of first half goals to distance themselves from the visiting Howard Bison in a 3-0 win on Tuesday night. Freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) netted two goals, as six different Retrievers had points to move to 3-1-3 on the year.

UMBC outshot the Bison 13-9, including a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made three saves in net for his second shutout of the year.

"We are getting better, we have a young squad and having three freshman score tonight shows the improvement this team is making," head coach Pete Caringi Jr. said after the win.

Pulliam got the Retrievers going just ten minutes in, netting his third goal of the season off a beautiful cross from Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England/Ryburn Valley). Trey Vinson (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) recorded his first career point after taking the ball up the sideline before back passing to Noel.

Freshman Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) tallied his first collegiate goal late in the first half, off a feed from Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Tom Paul (Stalybridge, Cheshire, England/West Hill School). For Paul, it was his first collegiate point.

The second half opened the same way it ended, as Pulliam extended the Retriever lead to 3-0 after a failed clear attempt found the foot of Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County), who fed it to Pulliam for the score in the 48 minute.

The Black and Gold return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. against La Salle.
