Retrievers Score First, Fall to UNC Wilmington 3-1 on Friday Night

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC (0-1-1) got on the board first, but a trio of goals by the Seahawks (2-0-0) gave them a 3-1 win against the Retrievers on Friday night. Senior Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) scored the Retriever goal, as UMBC put up ten shots in the contest.

The Retrievers peppered the UNCW goalkeeperRyan Cretens, outshooting the Seahawks 4-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) got the scoring started, as he placed a volley from seven yards out past Cretens. Junior Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England) took a corner and junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) was able to head a deflection on goal. The ball was cleared off the goal line, but Morales banged it home in the 67th minute.

However the Seahawks had the answer just minutes later, as Julio Moncada scored from ten yards out to tie the score at 1-1. Moncada would strike again just two minutes later on a similar play to give UNCW a 2-1 lead.

UNCW would put the game away with a goal by David Lozano in the 85th minute to give the Seahawks a 3-1 advantage.

UMBC had ten shots, three on goal, in the contest, including seven corners. Senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made one stop in net on four Seahawk shots on goal.

The Retrievers are back in action against Northern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
