UMBC welcomes Sacred Heart University to Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday, August 31 to conclude the season-opening Doubletree BWI Classic. The 15 th-ranked Retrievers opened the campaign with a 4-0 victory over Long Island University, while the Pioneers battled host Delaware tough, but fell on two late goals, 2-0 to the Blue Hens. Kick-off time is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed, free of charge on www.umbcretrievers.tv, as part of the America East digital network.
Doubletree BWI Classic (Friday Recap)
At Retriever Soccer Park, UMBC senior midfielder Geaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount St. Joseph) scored a pair of goals as 15th-ranked Retrievers opened its 2014 campaign with a 4-0 victory over Long Island before an enthusiastic crowd of 1,320.
In Newark, Delaware, the Sacred Heart men's soccer team hung with Colonial Athletic Association preseason favorites Delaware for 70 minutes Friday night at Grant Stadium, but the Blue Hens scored twice in the in the last 17 minutes to win 2-0 in the season opener for both teams. Delaware outshot SHU, 17-4, and Pioneer netminder Tucker Hackett made five stops for the visitors.
The Series: UMBC and Sacred Heart will compete for the first time since the two schools were Northeast Conference rivals in 2002.
The Retrievers holds a 4-1-0 advantage in the five all-time meetings. UMBC has won all three contests played in Baltimore. The Retrievers have outscored SHU, 13-4, in the five contests and won the last meeting, 2-1, at Retriever Soccer Park in 2002.
A Glance at the Pioneers: Last season, Sacred Heart posted a 5-13 overall record and a 2-5 mark in NEC play. The Pioneers did have a couple of impressive victories, defeating Drexel, 2-1, early in the campaign and finishing the season with a 2-0 blanking of perennial league power Fairleigh Dickinson.
Leading scorer JR M Mahmoud Kafel had an outstanding sophomore season, leading the Pioneers in goals scored (7) and total points (16). Linemate Kieran Walsh led SHU in assists as a freshman, dishing out four in his 15 starts.
Junior Tucker Hackett started 13 of 18 games in the nets for Sacred Heart in 2013 and posted a pair of shutouts.
SHU plays five of its first six games on the road to open the 2014 campaign.
Retriever Notes: Caltabiano scored twice for the second time in his career… He tallied a pair of goals while competing for Loyola University in a contest versus St. Peter's in 2011… Seniors Stephen Ho and Jordan Becker recorded the Retrievers' first two goals of the season, coming just over two minutes apart early in the first half… Red-shirt freshman netminder Phil Breno made three saves to record the shutout in his collegiate debut… Senior Kay Banjo posted a pair of assists in his Retriever debut… Banjo was a three-time All-CAA striker (2010-12) at Towson University.
The Retrievers' unbeaten streak now stands at 11 (8-0-3), as they ended the 2013 campaign unbeaten their last ten contests… UMBC improved to 8-0-1 in its last nine season-opening contests.
