BOSTON – UMBC sophomore midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) earned America East Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week honors for the week ending March 19.
The award is Nolan's first of his career and the Retrievers' first Player of the Week honor in 2017.
The 2016 America East All-Rookie team member scored a career-high five goals in the Retrievers' 12-9 victory at Stony Brook in the league opener for both squads.
He tallied twice in the first quarter as UMBC built a 6-4 halftime advantage. The Seawolves stormed back to tie the score at 7-all early in the fourth quarter, when Nolan went back to work. He scored the go-ahead goal at the 13:02 mark, then completed a fourth quarter hat trick when he notched the Retrievers' 10th and 11th goals in a decisive 5-0 run.
Entering the game, Nolan, who has started 19 of 21 games in his brief tenure, had posted one goal and three helpers on the year. His previous career high in goals was two, recorded at Ohio State in 2016.
The Retrievers (3-4, 1-0 AE) have won two straight and three of the last four contests. UMBC takes a final break from America East play and completes a three-game road swing next Saturday, March 25 when they make their first ever visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the Michigan Wolverines (7-1) at Michigan Stadium. The opening face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
