Men's Lacrosse Announces 2013 Spring Schedule
UMBC Head Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman announced the 2013 spring schedule today, which features four straight road games against preseason top-20 teams.
"We will play an extremely aggressive schedule in 2013," said the UMBC mentor, entering his 20th season at the helm of the Retrievers. "Playing five of our first six games on the road, including four games at Loyola, at Fairfield, at Maryland, and at Hopkins in eleven days, the Retrievers will no doubt be "battle-tested" going into the always-competitive America East Conference games beginning at Hartford on March 30th."
The Retrievers will open up their season with a road trip up to Moon Township, Pa. to face the Robert Morris Colonials on Sat., Feb. 16. The two squads met for the first time in 2012, and the visiting Colonials edged UMBC, 10-8, in the Retrievers' opener.
UMBC will host Rutgers on Sat., Feb. 23 for their only home game in the month of February. Zimmerman's club will then face the challenge of playing on Tue., Feb. 26 at defending national champion Loyola. The Retrievers will open March at Fairfield on Sat., March 2, trying to avenge a rare overtime loss (10-9) suffered at UMBC Stadium last season.
The Retrievers will have another short week as they play both at Maryland and at Hopkins less than 48 hours apart. UMBC will play Wed. night March 6 at Byrd Stadium and face Johns Hopkins at Homewood on Fri. March 8. at 5:30 PM. That contest will be televised by ESPNU.
Loyola is ranked preseason No. 1 by Inside Lacrosse. Fairfield is tabbed at No. 16, while 2012 national runner-up Maryland is No. 2 and Johns Hopkins was selected at No. 6.
UMBC will then host three games in a row, which includes two newcomers to the 2013 schedule. The Retrievers will welcome High Point to UMBC Stadium on Sat., March 16 and follow up with in-state rival Towson on Tue., March 19.
The Retrievers conclude the non-conference portion of the slate as they host Mt. St. Mary's on Sat. March 23. UMBC has not competed vs. the Mount since 2003.
America East competition begins with a road trip up to face the Hartford Hawks on Sat. March 30, before opening the month of April vs. Vermont on Sat., April 6.
After road contests at Stony Brook (Sat., April 13) and Albany (Frt., April 19), UMBC closes the regular season at home vs. Binghamton on Sat., April 27.
The 2013 America East Championships will take place at Stony Brook's LaValle Stadium. The semifinals take place on Thursday, May 2 and the title game begins at 10:00 on Sat., May 4. The championship game will be televised live on ESPNU.
