Four UMBC Lacrosse Players Among Nominees for America East Fans’ Choice Player of the Year
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Voting for the 2011 America East Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Fans’ Choice Player of the Year has opened at AmericaEast.com, and four Retrievers are among the 26 nominees. Senior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and junior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) represent UMBC on the women’s ballot, while junior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) and sophomore attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) are the Retrievers on the men’s ballot.
Krause is UMBC’s top scorer this season with 34 goals and 39 points, and she also leads the Retrievers with 26 ground balls, 24 draw controls and 17 caused turnovers. She has scored at least one point in all 15 games this season, with 10 multi-goal efforts and six hat tricks, and she notched her 100th career point earlier this season. The America East Player of the Week two weeks ago, Krause ranks fifth in the America East with 3.27 points per game and seventh with 2.27 goals per contest.
Braerman leads the Retrievers with 17 assists on the season, and she ranks second on the team with 44 points and third with 27 goals. She has scored a point in all but one game in 2011, with nine multi-goal efforts and four hat tricks. Braerman, who earned the season’s first America East Player of the Week award, ranks fourth all-time at UMBC with 56 career assists and 17th with 130 career points. She is sixth among league leaders with 1.13 assists per game and 2.93 points per outing. In addition, Braerman has tallied three game-winning goals on the year.
Jones is UMBC’s leading scorer with 20 goals and 28 points in 2011, and he has tallied the game-winning goal in all three of the Retrievers’ America East victories, including with 41 seconds left against Vermont on Saturday, which clinched a berth in the conference tournament. The America East Player of the Week last week, Jones ranks eighth in the league with 1.82 goals per game and 10th with 2.55 points per contest.
UMBC’s active career scoring leader, Grimm is tops on the team with 15 assists this season and ranks second with 12 goals and 27 points. He has produced three five-point games in 2011 and is sixth in the conference with 1.36 assists per game.
Voting runs through the end of the day Friday, April 29. The 2011 Men’s Lacrosse Fans’ Choice Player of the Year will be announced on Monday, May 2, while the 2011 Women’s Lacrosse Fans’ Choice Player of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, May 3.
