Men's Lacrosse Announces 2011 Schedule
UMBC head men’s lacrosse coach Don Zimmerman has announced the Retrievers’ schedule for the 2011 campaign.
The slate is highlighted by a five-week stretch which features four teams ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook 2011 poll. UMBC begins that stretch on Saturday, March 5 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on third-ranked North Carolina. A week later, the Retrievers face off against 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium in the Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic.
On Friday, March 18, UMBC makes the short trip down I-95 South to face sixth-ranked Maryland. That game will be WMAR-TV’s lone prime-time telecast of the season with the opening draw set for 8:00 p.m.
After a March 26 home contest against former America East foe Quinnipiac, the Retrievers open their America East schedule at eighth-ranked Stony Brook on Saturday, April 2. The Seawolves were an NCAA quarterfinalist in 2010.
"This year's schedule will once again afford our players the opportunity to measure themselves against some of the top teams in the country,” Zimmerman said. “The America East Conference is as competitive as ever and our out-of-conference schedule, highlighted by our game versus Johns Hopkins in the Minolta Face-Off Classic, is extremely demanding."
UMBC opens the campaign on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they travel to Clinton, S.C. for their first-ever meeting against Presbyterian. A week later, on Feb. 26, the Retrievers open the home slate by entertaining Rutgers at UMBC Stadium.
The Retrievers have one homestand, as they host local rival Towson on Wednesday, April 6 and then welcome America East foe Binghamton on Saturday, April 9. The noon game against the Bearcats will also be televised live by WMAR-TV/espn3. com.
Two of the final three games will be on the road in America East play, as UMBC visits Albany on April 16, and Hartford on April 30. UMBC’s final regular season home game will be against Vermont on Saturday, April 23.
The four-team America East Conference Championships opens on Wednesday, May 5 and the title game will be held on Saturday, May 8. Both semifinals and finals will be hosted by the higher seeds. The winner of the tournament receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships.
