FIFTH-RANKED TERRAPINS DEFEAT MEN'S LACROSSE, 15-8

College Park, MD--The fifth-ranked Maryland Terrpains (8-3) used a seven-goal first half run to defeat 13th-ranked UMBC (7-5), 15-8, before 1,933 rain-soaked fans at Byrd Stadium. UMBC jumped out to a 3-1 lead on first quarter scores by Josh Gerber, Pat Muston, and Joey Kestermann. But the Terrapins scored four goals in a 3:18 span late in the first quarter to take a 5-3 lead and added three additional unanswered tallies in the second stanza to lead 8-3 at intermission. Goals by UMBC's Phil Grillo and Gerber trimmed the deficit to 9-5 early in the fourth quarter, but UM capatalized on 8 third quarter turnovers by UMBC to scored the final three goals of the quarter and put the game out of reach. Gerber led UMBC with 3 goals, while Grillo added 2 goals and 1 assist. Gerber now has 28 goals on the year, the most in a single season since UMBC had two players with 30 or more goals in 1999. Tim Flanagan made 15 saves in going the distance for UMBC, who will finish the regular season at Ohio State on Wednesday.
