MEN'S LACROSSE DROPS 13-10 DECISION AT NAVY

Annapolis, MD--Navy jumped out to a 4-1 lead and UMBC could never get even as the Midshipmen (5-6, 1-4 ECAC) defeated the Retrievers (6-4, 1-4 ECAC), 13-10 before 1,286 at Rip Miller Field. After UMBC's Josh Gerber tied the game early at 1-1, the Mids scored three straight goals in a span of 2:22 to lead 4-1 with 6:39 to play in the first quarter. UMBC battled back to get within one goal on two occasions in the first half, but in both quarters, Navy scored the final goal of the frame and led 8-6 at intermission. The second half was much of the same, as the hosts built a 10-7 lead early in the third quarter, but goals by Gerber and Brendan Mundorf cut the deficit to 10-9 with 8:58 to play in the game. Mundorf would score his fourth goal of the game to again bring UMBC to within a goal at 11-10 with 5:40. UMBC got a possession and sophomore attackman Phil Grillo had a chance in front, but Navy netminder Seth DiNola denied him the tying goal. The Mids scored twice in the final 1:37 as UMBC pressed to get possession.Mundorf had his most productive outing of the season, leading UMBC with 4 goals and 2 assists. Gerber added 3 goals, while senior middie Adam Shiley had a goal and 2 assists. Tim Flanagan stopped 13 Navy shots, as the Mids outshot UMBC, 41-30. They also won the ground ball battle, 38-27 and controlled 16 of 26 draws. UMBC only has three days off to prepare for Delaware in Newark, DE on Saturday.
