MEN'S LACROSSE UPSETS #9 TOWSON, 10-9

    Senior attackman Josh Gerber converted a feed from senior midfielder Joey Kestermann with 2:40 left and the 17th-ranked UMBC Retrievers hung on to upset #9-ranked Towson, 10-9, at Towson Stadium. The win snaps a two-game losing streak overall and vs. the Tigers, while Towson lost for the first time in four outings.

    The Retrievers led the entire game, until TU's Todd Spear knotted the game at 9-9 after a long Towson barrage with 3:50 remaining. But UMBC controlled the ensuing face-off, and Kestermann beat his defender and found Gerber in front, who "one-timed" the shot past TU netminder Reed Sothoron.

    UMBC would be called for a pushing penalty with 1:09 to play, but Retriever netminder Tim Flanagan made one save with 48 seconds to play, and the Retrievers regained possession of the ball and iced the game by running out a blocked shot with 14 seconds left.

    The Retrievers built a stunning 6-0 lead by the 9:48 mark of the second quarter after Gerber scored off an assist by Kestermann. Towson sliced the lead to 7-2 at intermission, and outscored UMBC, 5-1, in the third quarter to cut the Retriever advantage to 8-7. Retriever sophomore attackman Phil Grillo restored a two-goal lead at the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter, and despite seven fourth quarter saves by Flangan, the Tigers managed to knot the score after trailing for 53 minutes .

    Gerber led all scorers with 4 goals and an assist, while Kestermann had three assists and Grillo added 2 goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Adam Shiley added a pair of goals and freshman attackman Brendan Mundorf contributed a goal and an assist. Flanagan was outstanding, as he made 15 saves, as TU outshot UMBC, 43-25, including 25-12 in the second half.
