MEN'S LACROSSE KNOCKS DARTMOUTH FROM UNBEATEN RANKS, 14-7

    Baltimore, MD-Freshman attackman Brendan Mundorf scored a season high four goals, two during a 5-0 UMBC surge in the first half, as UMBC (3-1) handed Dartmouth (4-1) its first loss of the season, a 14-7 decision at chilly UMBC Stadium. Freshman attackman Andy Gallagher put the Retrievers on the board first at 3:39 of the first half with an unassisted goal, but the Big Green countered with scores from freshman attackman Jamie Coffin and senior midfielder Brandon Wright to grab a 2-1 advantage midway through the period. But UMBC senior midfielder Joey Kestermann got the equalizer at the 10:28 mark of the first period, and gave the Retrievers the lead for good on a hard shot from the perimeter 2:15 into the second. After UMBC senior attackman Josh Gerber converted a Gallagher feed at the 7:22 mark, Mundorf scored an extra-man goal at 8:08 on an inside feed by sophomore midfielder Phil Grillo, and added a fast break tally at 9:39 to put the Retrievers ahead 6-2. The two teams traded the next eight goals of the game as the Big Green were within four scores at 10-6 after a Tom Daniels' goal 3:02 into the final period. But UMBC ran off four straight scores over a span of 3:14 to put the game away. Freshman midfielder James Hyland started the run with an extra-man goal at the 5:07 mark, and Grillo tallied the last two of the run 36 seconds apart which ended UMBC's scoring at the 8:21 mark. In addition to Mundorf's four points, Grillo had a season-high four points (2g, 2a), while Gallagher shared scoring honors with a goal and three assists. Senior middie Scott Steele added 2 goals and 1 assist, and Kestermann added a pair of goals. Retriever netminder Tim Flanagan made 14 saves, and maintained his .667 save percentage on the season. Coffin led DC with 2 goals and 1 assist, while sophomore midfielder Ben Grinnell scored a pair of goals. Starting netminder Andrew Goldstein made 12 saves, while allowing 10 goals in 52 minutes, while reserve Mike Gault stopped 3 and allowed 4 goals in 8 minutes of fourth quarter action. Entering the game, Dartmouth had not allowed more than seven goals in a game this season. The Retrievers scored on four of five extra-man chances, including all three in the fourth period.
