MEN'S LACROSSE TOPPLES STONY BROOK, 12-6

    Stony Brook, NY--The UMBC men's lacrosse team raced to an 8-0 lead and held off a late Stony Brook rally to defeat the host Seawolves, 12-6, in USB's first game in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Retrievers improve to 2-0, while Stony Brook falls to 0-2.

    The Retrievers got on the board early as freshman Brendan Mundorf scored 1:58 into the contest. Senior midfielder Scott Steele and freshman attackman Andy Gallagher each scored in the final 3:30 of the quarter to extend UMBC's lead to 3-0. Franklin Berry and Gallagher added scores in the second quarter to give UMBC a 5-0 intermission advantage. Berry, Gallagher ,and Josh Gerber built the lead to 8-0 before USB's Reed Darby scored the hosts first goal of the game with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter.

    After UMBC's Phil Grillo got that goal back one minute into the fourth quarter, USB outscored the Retrievers, 5-1, over the next seven minutes against reserve netminder Kevin Cepelak to cut the UMBC lead to 10-6 with 6:30 remaining. But Mundorf converted a Gerber pass on an extra-man opportunity with 5:06 to play, and Grillo capped the scoring on a Mundorf assist with 2:03 remaining.

    A pair of freshmen attackmen, Gallagher (3g, 1a) and Mundorf (2g, 2a) led UMBC with four points each. Gerber added a goal and two assists, while Berry and Grillo added a pair of goals, and Steele and freshman James Hyland each contributed a goal and an assists. Senior goalkeeper Tim Flanagan was outstanding, making 12 saves and allowing a single goal through the first three quarters.

    UMBC forced 10 Stony Brook penalties and converted 3 of 9 extra-man chances. The Retrievers meet Georgetown in the home opener and ECAC opener on Saturday. WMAR-TV and WWLG (1370AM) will carry the game live.
