Kyle Wimer, Bobby Atwell Named To Inside Lacrosse's Preseason All America Teams
Inside Lacrosse named UMBC senior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) to its preseason All-America First-Team squad, the publication announced on its website on Nov 30. Retriever defender Bobby Atwell (Dunkirk,Md./Southern) was also honored, as the fifth-year senior was selected to ILís Third Team squad.
Wimer, Atwell and senior short-stick defensive midfielder Jordan Pierce (Glen Burnie,Md./Mt. St. Joseph) were also named to Inside Lacrosseís preseason America East All-Conference team.
Face-Off Yearbook 2010 ranked UMBC as the No. 14 team in the country in its preseason rankings, while the coachesí poll in that publication rated the Retrievers at the No. 12 position.
Wimer earned All American and America East First-Team honors in 2008 after an All-Rookie team citation in 2006. The two-way midfielder recorded personal season bests of 24 goals and 18 assists in 2009 and has 98 points (53 goals, 45 assists) after his first three seasons of play.
Atwell earned All-Championship team honors in 2008 and America East Second Team accolades in 2007. He has competed in 46 games, with 32 starts in three seasons and amassed 86 ground balls and a pair of goals.
Pierce joined Wimer on the America East All-Conference First-Team in 2009.
Head Coach Don Zimmermanís squad will seek its fourth America East title and fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this spring. The campaign opens on Feb. 20, 2010 as the Retrievers host Delaware.
