5/3/2009
Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (12-3) will face sixth-seeded North Carolina (11-5) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championships. The Retrievers and Tar Heels will face off at UNC's Fetzer Field on Saturday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m.
The Retrievers will make their fourth consecutive appearance in the tournament and have earned a spot six times since 1999.
UMBC earned an automatic qualifier to the tournament by defeating Stony Brook, 11-7, to win their second consecutive America East title before 2,130 fans at UMBC Stadium on Saturday night. The Retrievers were selected as an at-large team in 1999, 2000 and 2007 and earned the automatic qualifiers through the America East championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
The Retrievers and Tar Heels have never met in NCAA Tournament competition. North Carolina leads the series, 17-6, and won the last meeting, 11-5, at UMBC Stadium. Since 1999, however, UMBC has won three of seven meetings.
The winner of the UMBC-UNC contest will advance to the quarterfinals and play the winner of the game between host No. 3 Duke and Navy. That game will take play at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Md. on Sunday, May 17 at 3:00 p.m.
UMBC is 1-5 in NCAA Division I championship play, earning its first victory in 2007 when the Retrievers defeated Maryland, 13-9, in College Park, Md. Last season, UMBC fell, 10-9, at second-seeded Virginia.
Tickets will be available at the Fetzer Field gates on Saturday. Fans are encouraged to park in the Cobb Parking Deck, Ramshead Parking Deck, Highway 54 lot and Boshamer Stadium lot. Because of graduation at Carolina on Sunday, there are many events on Saturday and fans are encouraged to plan accordingly and arrive early.
