#10 UMBC Men's Lacrosse Defeats #5 Maryland for Third Consecutive Time, 9-7

3/14/2009

  • Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--The 10th ranked UMBC men's lacrosse team defeated fifth-ranked Maryland for the third consecutive time, 9-7, Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Senior goalie Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) had seven saves as the Retrievers held the Terps to just one first half goal. Senior Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had two goals and an assist.

In the fourth quarter, the Retrievers earned unassisted goals from Wimer and sophomore Bobby Stockton (Ponte Vedre, Fla./Nease) to give UMBC an 8-3 lead. After a Terp goal by Grant Catalino, Wimer struck again just 37 seconds later to reestablish the five-goal lead.

Maryland then pulled off three in a row to end the game on goals by Ryan Young, Will Yeatman and Catalino. Yeatman's was a man-up goal as the Terps were 2-for-2 in man-advantage situations, while the Retrievers were 1-for-4.

The Retrievers scored a man-up goal at 6:05 of the third period when freshman Rich May (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored off a crisp pass from fellow freshman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) to give UMBC a 5-1 lead, but the Terps scored just six second later on a Young goal. Maryland cut the lead to two on a Grant Catalino goal at 10:25.

Grimm scored on a fast break opportunity, receiving the pass from senior Ryan Smith (Fallston, Md./Fallston/CCBC-Essex) before faking a low shot before putting the ball in the top-left corner at 13:06.

In a second quarter of long possessions for both teams with nothing to show for it for almost the first 12 minutes, Hopmann fed senior Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State), who scored on a shot to the top-right corner to give the Retrievers a 3-1 lead at 11:56. Hopmann scored less a minute and a half later to make it 4-1 at 13:32.

In an opening quarter of hard-hitting good defense, the Retrievers opened the scoring when junior Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) beat Maryland goalie Brian Phipps off a pass from junior Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) at 1:35. The Terps tied the game at 8:58 when Young wrapped around the goal to beat Blevins. UMBC regained the lead when Hopmann beat a Maryland defender and then Phipps at 12:45.

Freshman Justin Radebaugh (Lutherville, Md./Boys' Latin) handled the face-offs for UMBC, winning 10 of 20 after the Retrievers won just 9 of 41 in their two previous games.

The Retrievers return to action next Saturday when they host Ohio State at 1 p.m.
