  • Princeton at UMBC, '09

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (3-1) faces six-time national champion, No. 5 Princeton (2-0) on Friday, March 6 at UMBC Stadium. Opening face off is set for 8:06 p.m. and live video streaming is available at www.umbcretrievers.tv.

The Retrievers suffered their first loss of the year, a 14-11 setback to No. 10 Johns Hopkins on a frigid Tuesday night affair at UMBC Stadium. UMBC opened the season by avenging 2008 losses to Delaware and Rutgers with 14-9 and 17-10 wins respectively over the Blue Hens and Scarlet Knights. The Retrievers upended No. 17 Colgate, 13-9, before Tuesday night’s loss to Hopkins.

The Retrievers’ 3-0 start was its best since opening with three straight wins in the 2001 season.

The UMBC offense has been dynamic, averaging 13.8 goals per game and six players have five or more goals on the campaign. The Retrievers entered play this week at the No. 2-ranked scoring offense in the country. Senior midfielder Peet Poillon (8g, 10a) leads the offensive with 18 points, followed by linemates Kyle Wimer (11g, 4a) and Alex Hopmann (11g, 1a). Hopmann scored a career-high four goals in Tuesday’s game vs. Johns Hopkins.

Princeton has been explosive as well, opening with a 14-6 home win over Canisius, then jumping over Hopkins early en route to a 14-8 win over the Blue Jays in Baltimore on Feb. 28. Sophomore attackman Jack McBride has four goals in each of the Tigers’ first two contests. h of Princeton’s first two games

UMBC leads the series with the Tigers, 6-4. The two teams have not met in the regular season since 1990. Princeton captured the last meeting, 11-8, in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. A pair of then-freshmen led their respective teams in scoring on that day and will compete as seniors in this evening’s game. Alex Hopmann produced his first career three-goal game for UMBC, while Tommy Davis led Princeton with three goals. Princeton won the critical face-off battle, 14-9, including taking 10 of 14 in the first three quarters. UMBC outshot Princeton, 37-32, as UMBC freshman netminder Jeremy Blevins stopped 12 PU efforts. It was UMBC's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1999.

UMBC is 3-2 at home vs. Princeton and 3-1 at UMBC Stadium. The 1984 game was played at Loyola College.
